DESASTER/ASPHYX INTERVIEW WITH DRUMMER TORMENTOR

- Tormentor, ich bedanke mich bei Dir, dass Du dieses Interview angenommen hast, wie geht’s, wie steht’s? Bist Du sehr beschäftigt? Hey, na klar. Mach ich doch gerne. Im Moment beruhigt es sich etwas. Die letzten Monate waren sehr anstrengend. Viele Shows, neue Songs, viel Stress auf der Maloche und eine liebe Freundin hab ich ja auch noch  Ist manchmal nicht leicht, alles unter einen Hut zu bringen, aber zum Ende hin hat es jetzt (fast) immer gepasst. /Tormentor, thanks a lot for accepting my interview request, how are you these days? Are you quite busy? Hey there, no problem. At the moment all becomes more calm again. Last months were really heavy. Many shows, new songs and a lot of stress at my regular job. But at the end all worked fine. - Was ist mit Deinen Bands Desaster, Carnal Ghoul, Infektor? Mit Desaster läuft alles super, sind gerade neue songs am schreiben für ein neues album, haben einige coole shows gespielt und ja eine jubileums DVD/ live CD veröffentlicht. Carnal Ghoul dümmüelt im Moment etwas vor sich hin, da leider mir die Zeit fehlt und die anderen mit ihren bands auch einiges zu tun haben (Milking the Goatmachine/ Miseo/ Fleshcrawl). Aber ich denke, wir werden irgendwann noch mal paar neue Songs schreiben. Infektor ist wirklich nicht meine Band, lediglich ein Sideprojekt, wo aber bis jetzt noch nichts kam von Chris (Satanika). What about your bands Desaster, Carnal Ghoul, Infektor? Desaster is going well currently we are writing new songs for a new album, played a lot of great shows the last months and released a anniversary DVD/CD/LP lately. Carnal Ghoul is a bit calm at the moment, because of i haven’t enough time for the band and also the other guys have many stuff to do with their own bands (Milking The Goatmachine/ Miseo/ Fleshcrawl) . But I think we’lll write some new songs in the next time. Infektor is not my band, just a sideproject from Chris (Satanika). - Ich las, dass High Roller Records von Desaster ein Doppelalbum „Live In Bamberg” veröffentlicht hat, was kannst Du uns über diese Platte sagen? War es ein speziales Konzert? Jawohl, wir haben vor Kurzem eine DVD/CD und DoLP via High Roller veröffentlicht. Proffesionell aufgenommen auf unserer Jubileumsshow in Bamberg mit vielen Ex Mitgliedern/ Gast Musiker. Dieser Abend war wirklich magisch. 1,5 Stunden Desaster von 1989-2013. Das Konzert war schon Monate vorher ausverkauft und die Maniacs sind abgegangen, es war sensationell. Diese Show wurde dann auf CD/LP gebannt und als Zugabe gibt es auf der DVD noch 1,5 Stunden eine ausführliche Bandhistory, wo wirklich jeder, der mit Desaster eng im Kontakt steht zu Wort kam, alte Aufnahmen etc. Checkt das Teil aus, es lohnt sich! http://www.hrrecords.de/high_roller/start.html I read, that High Roller Records from Desaster released a double live album titled „Live in Bamberg”, what can you tell us about this record? Was it a special event? Oh yes, we released a live DVD/CD/DoLP via High Roller Records. It was a professional recording on our anniversary show in Bamberg/Ger with many ex members and guest musicians. That night was magic! 1,5 h of total Desaster from 1989 to 2013  The show was sold out months before and banned on CD and vinyl plus a 1,5 h running documentary of Desaster, were all ex member and close friends were interviewed. Check it out! It’s worse to buy it! http://www.hrrecords.de/high_roller/start.html - Was Carnal Ghoul betrifft, ist es nur ein Hobby Project oder sozusagen eine normale Band? Plant ihr eventuell ein Album aufzunehmen? Arbeitet ihr eventuell auf Material? CG ist eine normale Band, jedoch gehen wir die Sache etwas ruhiger an. Die erste volle Scheibe ist geplant. Aber wir werden sehen, wann sich das realisieren lässt. Neues Material ist schon geschrieben, evtl müssen noh 1-2 songs fertig gemacht werden. Time will tell! - As for Carnal Ghoul, is it a side project or so to speak a normal band? Are you working perhaps on some material? Do you perhaps plan to record an album? CG is a real band, but we try to keep things easy, no hurry. The first full length is planned. But we’ll see when we start to record the songs. Maybe we have to write 1-2 more songs, rest is ready! Time will tell! - Für mich ist/war eine grosse Überraschung, dass Du der Schlagzeuger von Asphyx geworden bist, wie ist der Wahl der Gruppe auf Dich gefallen (getroffen)? Ich bekam eines Tages eine Email von Mr. Van Drunen, in der er mich fragte, ob ich nicht Bock hätte bei Asphyx zu trommeln. Ich habe natürlich erstmal verneint, da ich Fan der Band bin und die Jungs von vor der Bühne sehen möchte und nicht deren Hinterteile :D Jedoch nachdem Bob mir auch schrieb, er mir alles erklärte und mir zu verstehen gab, dass nur ich und sonst keiner den Job machen dürfte, willigte ich ich ein. Ich kenne die Jungs schon ewig durch gemeinsame shows mit Desaster. Mit Alwin’s alter Band Pulverizer haben wir for vielen Jahren mal zusammen paar shows gespielt. Auch wenn es mir schwer fällt Asphyx ohne Bob zu sehen. Für mich ist immer noch alles wie in einem Traum. Aber es macht Spaß und die Jungs sind klasse. Alle ziehen an einem Strang und die Magie auf der Bühne ist einfach wahnsinn! Ich bin kein guter/ technisch perfekter Schlagzeuger und mag mehr das gradlinige. Ich denke, das war den Jungs wichtig. Außerdem kann man mit den Jungs sehr geil feiern ;) - For me is/was the biggest surprise, that you became the drummer of legendary cult Dutch death metal act Asphyx, how did you get in the picture being the drummer of the band? Did they audition other drummers too or were you the first choice of the band? One day i received an email from Sir Van Drunen, who asked me to join Asphyx, Of course I said no, because I am a big fan of the band and wanted to see them with bob from infront of the stage and not onstage. But after Bob himself told me that I was the only person who was kind oif „allowed” to drum in Asphyx, I said „yes” :D I know the guys from shows with Desaster. With Alwin’s old band Pulverizer we played some shows many years ago. Even when it’s still hard to see Asphyx without Bob, it’s still like living in a dream. But it’s good fun on stage and beside. All are 100% behind the band and the magic on stage is unbelievable. I am far away from a technical or good drummer, I prefer sraight forward, mabye that’s what was one of the main things. And the aftershow parties are always amazing :D - Bist Du ein Session Trommler oder ein ständiges Mitglied? Es sieht so aus, dass ich ein festes Bestandteil der Band bin. Und ich kann es immer noch nicht glauben. Jedes mal wenn wir „Last one on earth” oder „Forgotten War” oder „The Rack” spielen, hab ich Tränen in den Augen. Are you session drummer or a full time member? Looks like I am a bandmember now :D I still can’ t believe. Every single time when we play „Last one”, „The Rack” or „Forgotten War” live on stage I have tears in my eyes. - Warum hat sich Bob Bagchus die Band verlassen? Gab es irgendwelche Differenzen (ich meine persönliche, musikalische) unter den Bandmitgliedern? Bob möchte einfach mehr zeit mit seiner Familie verbringen. Asphyx ist eine sehr agile live- band, die viel in der weltgeschichte rumfliegt und dieses ganze fliegen ist nun mal leider sehr zeitaufwenig. Der Kontakt zur Band besteht weiterhin. Alleine schon wg Grand Supreme Bloodcourt etc. - Why did Bob Bagchus leave the band? Were there any conflicts between the bandmembers? Did they part ways on a friendly term at the end? Bob wanted more time for his family. Asphyx is playing many shows a year with many flights etc. And to be on plane always needs many time, which he prefered to stay with his children and his wife. He is still in touch with all in the band. He also is still in Grand Supreme Bloodcourt. - Was sagst Du dazu, dass Soulburn in die Szene zurückgekehrt ist? Wie gefällt Dir das „The Suffocating Darkness” Album? Waaah, i liebe Soulburn. Ich war damals auf deren legänderen gig auf dem Wacken Open Air. Keine Ahnung, welches Jahr es war. Leider hab ich das neue Album noch nicht gehört, bis auf ein paar Auszüge. Ich liebe Bob’s drumming und Eric’s shred axe ;) - What do you say to it, that Soulburn returned to the scene? How do you like „The Suffocating Darkness” record? Waaah, I love Soulburn. I was at their show in Wacken many years ago. The new album I didn’t listen yet. Only some sniples. But I love Bob’s drumming and Eric’s shredding axe! - Ist es eine Ehre für Dich mit Martin Van Drunen zusammenzuspielen? Wie würdest Du die Asphyx Mitglieder persönlich charakterisieren? Als ich von den Jungs gefragt wurde, war das wie ein Traum. In dem bin ich immer noch. Es ist einfach geil mit den Jungs auf einer Bühne zu sein und auch der ganze Reisekram macht einfach voll Bock! Martin is so ein cooler Typ, total auf dem Boden geblieben, Metalhead und ich liebe seine (im positiven Sinne) „große Klappe” :D haha… Glaub mir, ich hab schon einiges erlebt im letzten Jahr. Es ist einfach überwältigend! Martin ist für mich das Aushängeschild des Death Metal. Es gibt nur wenige, die eine eigenständige Stimme haben. Und seine hört man einfach sofort raus. Paul ist der Riffmaster General, Sunnyboy und ein super freundlicher Mensch, auf der Bühne ist er wie ein Gummiball. Keine Ahnung wie man so abgehen kann und gleichzeitig Gitarre spielen kann. Alwin ist der typische DM Headbanger auf der Bühne, ein unglaublich witziger Kerl und unser Merchboss :D Ihn kenne ich von allen am längsten! Die Jungs haben es mir sehr einfach gemacht mich einzufügen. Ich muss jetzt einfach mal Danke sagen für die unglaublich geile Zeit in 2014! Ich freu mich auf die nächsten Jahre! Is it a honor for you to play together Martin Van Drunen with? How would you describe personally the Asphyx members? When the guys asked me to join Asphyx, it was like a dream. And I am still dreaming! To be on stage with the guys is amazing and also the whole travel stuff makes fun. Martin is such a „down to earth” guy with a great attitude and absolutly so „rockstar” image. Like all in the band btw! 100% Metalhead! Believe in me, so much great fun happened the last year. Amazing! Marint is for me THE voice in Death Metal. There are only a few who have their own style. And his voice you recognice directly! Paul is the Riffmaster Generall, Sunnyboy and one of the nicest persons I ever met! Onstage he is like a rubberball, can’t belive that a person can freak out on stage like this and still playing guitar! Alwin is the typical DM headbanger on´stage and our Merchboss. I know he longer than the other 2 guys and he is always good for a joke! The guys make it very easy for me to be in Asphyx and I really appreciate every second with them! Thanks Guys for the last 12 month! I raise my sticks for the next years! Cheeeeers godverdomme! - Erinnerst Du Dich noch daran, wie und wann Du Asphyx entdeckt hast? Was war Dein erstes Asphyx Material bzw. Was ist Dein Lieblingsstück von der Gruppe? Was denkst Du über ihre letzte Scheibe „Deathhammer”? Boah, fuck, das weiß ich nicht genau, meine erste Show war 91, gleube ich, damals haben die drei in Trier gespielt. Erstes Album war natürlich „The Rack” hab mir damals sofort noch die 7” bei Nuclear Blast bestellt. Ich habe viele Liebslingssongs, aber vermutlich „The Rack”, „Last one on earth” und „Deathhammer” sind meine Faves. Aber im Endeffekt mag ich alles von der Band. Auch „Asphyx” „Wings of Inferno” etc. In meinen Augen ist „Deathhammer” neben „The Rack” das beste Asphyx album. Es ist kompakt, ohne Geschnörkel, einfach Death Metal wie er sein muss! Das ganze Konzept (Musik, Sound, Layout, Cover) passt perfekt! Danke Jungs! Do you perhaps remember how and when did you discover Asphyx? What was your first material from them respectively what is your favourite material from them? What do you think about their last album „Deathhammer”? Fuckin’ hell, can’t remember exactly, but my first show must be around 1991 here near Koblenz in a town called Trier. My first material i listen to was „The Rack”, after that I bought directly their 7” at a store called Nuclear Blast. Back than they were like a real UG label/mailorder for hard music, hahaha. I have many songs I really like, but maybe „The Rack”, „Last one on earth” and „Deathhammer” are my alltime faves. But I like all stuff Asphyx released, also „Asphyx” and „Wings of inferno” etc. In my opinion „Deathhammer” is next to The Rack” their best album. It is to the point as Death Metal should be! All fits perfect together like coverartwork, layout, music, sound… Thanks guys! - Wie oft probiert ihr bzw. Wie oft könnt ihr probieren? Wie kannst Du die Proben lösen/erledigen?/ Mit Desaster proben wir wöchentlich. Normaler weise 1x die Woche. Asphyx Songs probe ich meistens alleine im Proberaum. Mit der Band haben wir dieses Jahr 4 Proben an 2 Wochenenden. How often do you rehearse respectively how often can you rehearse? How can you reconcile the rehearsals? With Desaster I rehearse once a week. And for the Asphyx songs i rehearse alone in my rehearsal bunker. Last year we had 4 rehearsals on 2 weekends. - Habt ihr eventuell schon neues Material? Wie läuft der Prozess des Songwritings innerhalb der Band?/ Mit Desaster sind wir kurz davor eine neue Platte fertig zu schreiben. Es fehlen noch 3 songs und ein outro. In Asphyx schreibt Paul zuhause dioe meisten songs. Wir werden im Januar zusammen proben um einen Großteil der neuen Songs fertig zu haben. Does Asphyx already have some new material written? What about the songcomposing as a whole? Paul is the songwriter in Asphyx and he allready has some tracks ready I guess. We’ll rehearse in January. - Ist es kein Problem/Spielt keine Rolle, dass die Bandmitglieder auch in verschiedenen Gruppen spielen, z. B. Grand Supreme Blood Court, Hail Of Bullets, Thanatos, Escutcheon? Habt ihr viel Zeit sich (könnt ihr) auf Asphyx zu konzentrieren? Nein, das ist alles ok. Plamnung ist alles :D Isn’t any problem/Doesn’t play any role, that the bandmembers are playin gin several bands, such as Grand Supreme Blood Court, Hail Of Bullets, Thanatos, Escutcheon? Do you have time (can you) to concentrate on Asphyx? No, thats fine :D good planning is important! - Soviel ich weiss, ihr habt in Russland gespielt, wie war die Reise nach Russland? War es zum ersten Mali n Russland zu spielen? Ist alles gut gelaufen?/ Jawohl, wir haben eine show in moskau gespielt und es war fantastisch! Organisation, Fans und Bier… alles war super! - - If I’m correct, you played in Russia, how was the trip to Russia, how did the tour come into being respectively how did the whole tour go? Was itt he first time for Asphyx to play in Russia? Yes, sir… we played a show in moscow some weeks ago and it was fantastic. Good organisation, beers and fans! - Habt ihr eventuell während des Sommers an verschieden Festivals teilgenommen? Wie haben die Fans auf die Gruppe reagiert/ Wir haben einige shows gespielt. Ich habe bis jetzt noch keine Klagen gehört. :D Did you take part on several festival in the summer by the way? Did the fans like the band? We played a shitload of festivals last summer. I heard nothing negative so far :D - Zwischen Desaster und Pentacle gibt es eine gute Freundschaft, hast Du eventuell Informationen über die Gruppe (Pentacle)? Hat Dir ihre letzte Scheibe „The five candles are burning red” gefallen? Haha, da musst du die jungs selber fragen! Wir haben zusammen auf unserer 25 jahres party gespielt. Das wars aber auch. Neue Scheibe ist saustark! Between Desaster and Pentacle is a good friendship a long time ago, do you have any information about them? Do you like their last record „The five candles are burning red”? Haha, you better ask the guys by themself! We only played together on our 25 years anniversary party.
